An unfortunate fact about aging is that our skin progressively loses its strength and elasticity and becomes marred by droopy features and unsightly wrinkles. There are, however, many other factors that influence wrinkle development, including environmental variables as pollution and sun damage, and, of course, genetics.
No matter how quickly or slowly we age, though, we will all eventually experience issues. Therefore, it is normal to seek non-surgical treatment for pesky imperfections and insecurities. To best understand how to resolve these problems, though, it helps to know what, exactly, causes wrinkles to form in the first place.
What Causes Wrinkles?
Wrinkles—specifically smile and forehead lines—are generally caused by our near-constant use of our facial muscles, which, over the course of our lives, causes the skin to crease into permanent folds. Additionally, the reason wrinkles usually form later in life is because the body progressively produces less elastin, the protein that helps the skin stay strong, stretchy, and youthfully attractive.
Long-term exposure to UV light—which we naturally absorb from the sun—is also a common contributing factor to wrinkle development, and people who are outside more frequently tend to age at a quicker pace (for the outdoorsy, regular use of sunscreen has been proven to shield the skin). Additionally, smokers’ skin quality tends to deteriorate in the 30s and 40s, as tobacco and other chemicals increase the rate at which human tissue breaks down.
Other contributing factors include, but are not limited to:
- Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages
- Chronic dehydration
- Unbalanced or unhealthy diet
- Lack of moisturization
- Exposure to certain chemicals
Non-Surgical Ways to Combat Wrinkles
Many have unfortunately been led to believe that surgery, like a facelift, is the only way to eliminate wrinkles, but this is simply not the case; there are countless non-invasive medical treatments that boast results on par with extensive surgery.
BOTOX, one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world, is an FDA-approved injectable produced by Allergan (a pharmaceutical company) that treats all kinds of facial wrinkles. Its main ingredient is Botulinum Toxin Type A, a neurotoxin that, while normally harmful to humans, is safe to use in small doses. When injected, BOTOX blocks neurotransmitter signals within the muscles and effectively stops them from flexing and contracting. This not only smooths the face, but also prevents future folds from forming. BOTOX lasts anywhere from 3 to 6 months, and touch-ups are generally required to maintain results.
Another injectable that uses Botulinum Toxin A is Jeuveau (also called Newtox), made by Evolus. Approved by the FDA in February 2019, it is essentially a purer form of BOTOX that delivers similar results and longevity. Newtox, though, is generally considered safer than BOTOX, as it uses Hi-Pure technology, a process that removes unnecessary proteins in a more meticulous production cycle.
Dysport, a dermal filler conceived of and distributed by Nestlé Skin Health, was approved by the FDA in 2017. It corrects deep creases in the forehead, the brows, the nose, the mouth, and the neck. It is nearly identical in composition to BOTOX, but has a different molecular weight and is more diluted, which means that more product is required to achieve good results. Dysport lasts between 3 and 4 months.
Like the aforementioned injectables, Xeomin, FDA-approved in 2010, uses Botulinum Toxin to treat moderate to dramatic wrinkles and lines. As is the case with BOTOX and Newtox, Xeomin’s results can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months. During production, Botulinum Toxin A is isolated, and its accompanying proteins are removed, leaving behind an extraordinarily safe and pure product.
