One’s health should be the first priority. You can establish a health check routine at home by taking blood glucose testing. You do not have to go to medical checkup offices to get your glucose level tested.

    What does CGM measure?

CGM or Continuous Glucose devices help patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. It is the best device for blood glucose testing. In other words, they do not have to take lots and lots of fingerstick tests. For instance, just a sensor under your skin measures the glucose level 24 hours a day. After that, a transmitter sends results to a wearable device or your mobile.   However, fingerstick checks measure the blood glucose one moment at a time.

    Insulin

Insulin is a hormone. Therefore, it helps to regulate your blood sugar levels. For instance, if you have Type 1 diabetes, you will not produce enough or in some cases any insulin. In Type 2 diabetes, even though your body makes insulin it does not use it properly.

Importance of tracking blood sugar levels

You need to track the blood sugar level to know when and how much insulin your body needs. Blood sugar levels can fluctuate. For instance, hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia can damage the body.  Diabetes affects everyone differently. For instance, how a certain food affects the glucose level in your body differs from how it would affect another person.

These factors can make managing diabetes challenging. Therefore, you need to track your sugar level with the monitors.

How do the Continuous Glucose Monitors Work?

First, you place a small sensor under your skin. The applicator makes it easy to do so.

After that, the sensor measures the glucose level in the blood. Many CGM devices take readings every five minutes. Therefore, you have to change the sensor regularly. For example, most devices need changing every 7 to 14 days.

In addition, all the CGM systems use a transmitter. The transmitter sends the glucose data wirelessly from the sensor to the device. The device flashes the glucose levels on the display monitor. Some CGM systems are reusable. Therefore, you can attach them to a new sensor when needed.

Depending on the CGM system, the glucose data from the sensor gets sent to a handheld device. The device is also known as a receiver on your smartphone. Or it gets sent to an insulin pump. Therefore, you can download the CGM data.

    How to Use CGM devices?

It may take a little time to understand the workings of CGM. Therefore, take your time with it. Here are few ways to use it-

    • Insert the sensor properly.
    • The device needs calibrating with fingerstick blood glucose readings Set device alarms.
    • Transfer the reading data to your computer for analysis
    • Make changes to your diet and health plans accordingly

    Advantages of using CGM devices

The CGM data gives you a bigger picture of your glucose level.  You can trace how your blood sugar changed over time. Therefore, you can change your diet and health plans accordingly. In addition, you can also monitor food, activity, stress, and illness that may impact your blood sugar levels.

Your healthcare provider can download and access your CGM data. Therefore, they will review it for patterns and trends. After that, they can personalize your care based on the data.

Most CGM devices alert you when your glucose level falls or rises. In either case, you can make changes and adjustments quickly. You can prevent any serious symptoms or results if the blood glucose level suddenly fluctuates.

In conclusion, CGM significantly reduces the number of fingerstick tests you need each day.
