If you’re considering breast augmentation surgery, you probably have a lot of questions about what to expect during recovery. That’s normal!
We want to make sure that you know what to expect, so we’ve put together a list of the different stages of your breast augmentation recovery.
Stages of Breast Augmentation Recovery
Here are the different stages of recovery, including what to expect during each one:
Stage 1: Immediately After the Surgery
Immediately after the surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room where you will be monitored until you are ready to go home. You may experience some swelling and bruising of the breasts, but this should go away in a few weeks.
You will have a bandage over your breasts and they may feel tight, but do not worry! The feeling will ease up as your body heals. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication, and we encourage you to take them as directed. You may experience swelling and bruising, but this too will heal within a week or two.
Stage 2: One-Week Post-op
At this point, most of your initial discomfort should be gone, but there may still be some residual soreness around the surgical site that can last up to two weeks post-up. If you find yourself unable to move around much because of discomfort or other issues related to healing from surgery such as nausea or headaches — or if there is any sign of infection at all — please contact your surgeon immediately.
Stage 3: Two Weeks Post-op
By two weeks after surgery, your swelling should have subsided significantly. You may still feel some soreness around the incision area; however, this should gradually subside as well with time and proper care. If you notice any redness or swelling in the area of your incision that does not go away on its own within two weeks after surgery, contact your doctor immediately!
Stage 4: Six Weeks Post-op
At this point, you can expect to feel mostly back to normal (with some lingering soreness). Your breasts are still likely to be swollen, so it’s important not to go bra shopping yet! You can likely return to work or school at this point if you’re feeling up to it — just make sure that you stay on top of any post-surgery instructions that your doctor gave you so that you don’t put yourself at risk for infection or other complications!
Stage 5: Three Months Post-op
At three months post-surgery, you’ll likely see the final results of your procedure. Your new breasts should feel natural, move naturally with your body, and look good under clothing—but they will still be tender while they continue to heal completely.
Stage 6: Six Months Post-op
By six months post-op, most patients have regained their full range of motion and strength. They can also resume normal activities such as running and weightlifting without any restrictions or limitations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that enlarges and improves the appearance of breasts. The procedure can be performed by either inserting implants under the breast tissue or by using fat tissue taken from another part of the body (such as the hips, abdomen, or thighs) to increase breast size.
Do I Need a Consultation Before Getting My Breast Augmentation?
Yes! Consultations with your surgeon will help you decide which type of implant will work best for your body type and desired results.
What Can I Do During My Downtime?
During this period of recovery, it’s best not to engage in strenuous activity or exercise that involves heavy lifting or jogging until your doctor permits you — and even then, it’s important not to push yourself too hard! Once you’re cleared by your doctor, try walking slowly on flat surfaces while holding a light weight (no more than five pounds).
How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?
Breast augmentation procedure prices vary depending on several factors. The size and shape of your breasts, the type of implant you choose, and your location are just a few of the factors that affect the price of surgery.
According to recent research by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the average cost of breast augmentation is $4,516.
What Is the Best Age to Get Breast Augmentation Surgery?
The best age for breast augmentation surgery is the one when you are most comfortable with yourself and your body. While some people choose to wait until after having children, others choose to do so before having children. If you are looking for a safe way to increase your cup size, it is important that you feel confident in your decision.
What Are Some Common Risks Involved With Breast Augmentation Surgery?
There are many risks associated with any kind of surgery—but especially cosmetic surgeries that require cutting into healthy tissue—and these risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry (uneven appearance), or capsular contracture (hardening).
